yoga for health and wellbeing

Discover Yoga is our brand new series, brought to you by the experts at The Wellbeing Agency.

But, why yoga?

Yoga is an ancient practice, focusing on strength, flexibility and breathing through a series (also called a ‘flow’) of poses and its origins started in India around 5,000 years ago.

Yoga is considered to be one of the most important, effective tools available to overcome various physical and psychological problems, with evidence it reduces overall anxiety and can be great to bust work-related stress, as well as boosting happiness. Those who stick with regular yoga practice report themselves to be happier and healthier.

Yoga practices can be done by everybody, anywhere, making it one of the most accessible forms of movement that can help with mental, physical and social wellbeing.

We know different styles and teachers will appeal to different people, so through our Discover Yoga series we’ll focus on bringing a wealth of new content to our audience, so that they can discover their style, try something new and find something they love and want to stick with in the long run.

Different Yoga Practices

There are so many different types of yoga which have so many mental, physical and social wellbeing benefits.

Vinyasa Yoga – Focusing on breath work, Vinyasa Yoga moves slowly from one pose to another, a great introduction to Yoga if you’re a complete beginner.

Hatha Yoga – All about balancing the body and mind, Hatha Yoga incorporates lots of breath work too, and can also include more meditative practices, such as chanting.

Yin Yoga – Focusing on your muscles and deep connective tissues such as your ligaments, joints and bones, Yin Yoga is slow-paced and great for mobility as well as de-stressing your mind and body.

Power Yoga – More fast-paced than the other types of yoga, Power Yoga goes quickly from one move to another and is a great workout focussing on strength, power and flexibility.

Ashtanga Yoga – Often described as classical Indian yoga, Ashtanga Yoga is an energetic style, focusing on the synchronicity of movement and breath.

Rocket Yoga – a dynamic, fast-paced flow and one of the most modern forms of yoga. The structure maintains that of Ashtanga Vinyasa, consisting of a warm up (Surya Namaskar A + B), after which one continues in the standing poses, seated poses, and ending with the traditional closing series.

Yoga Therapy

Yoga therapy uses movement, breathing, meditation and of course, yoga as a holistic approach to address mental, physical and emotional needs. It’s less about teaching you yoga poses, and more about using yoga techniques in ways that will help with what may be causing you stress or anxiety in your life. It’s often used to treat chronic pain, poor mental health, illness support and injury recovery. It can also be done during times of high-stress or anxiety by individuals to quickly bring about calm and reduce discomfort.
